Five Movies “Return of the Fly” by the Misfits Might Be About
Alright, it’s time for some Misfits! Who doesn’t love these infamous progenitors of horror punk? Whether you’re rocking out to Glenn Danzig’s signature crooning in their older releases or January 6th enthusiast Michale Graves’ perfectly serviceable nineties albums, they’ve got something for everybody. Today, we’re going to revisit a beloved tune from their classic Static Age album while we speculate what movie the song “Return of the Fly” is about.
- The Good Son (1993)
This one seems kind of unlikely, seeing as how Static Age was recorded in 1978, which is a full 15 years before The Good Son. Still, it doesn’t seem completely out of the realm of possibility, does it? It’s not like we’re total dumbshits for thinking there could be a connection here. After all, the movie’s pretty intense, just like the band. You remember that scene with the mom holding those kids off the cliff, trying to decide which one to save? Crazy.
- Dumbo (1941)
Yeah, this doesn’t strike us as highly probable, either. At least it makes more sense chronologically. To be completely honest, we don’t remember anything about it except those crows that absolutely did not age well. Perhaps we should not have brought up this movie.
- Play Misty for Me (1971)
A pre-rambling RNC speech-giving Clint Eastwood getting stalked by Jessica Walter? Yes, please. Although we’re not sure if this flick influenced any Misfits songs. Give us a break. Have you come up with any suggestions?
- The Exorcist (1973)
By far the least implausible film we’ve included so far, The Exorcist scared the absolute Christ out of soft, easily-frightened theater attendees in the early seventies. It definitely seems likely that every member of The Misfits was at the very least a fan of this one, at least more so than any of the others, right? That’s certainly all we need. Unless the next one completely hits the nail on the head, we’re going to presume this is what “Return of the Fly” was about.
- Return of the Fly (1959)
Shit. This one’s definitely it, isn’t it? Look, it even had Vincent Price, who was explicitly mentioned in the song. We totally just wasted your time and ours with our last four entries, but you know what? We’re not going to apologize. We’re just a punk news website. Nowhere in our mission statement did we claim to be smart. If you clicked on this article hoping for actual information, that’s your fault.
